HIBC Barcode Decoder Guide: How to Read HIBC Code 128 Data

HIBC codes carry a licence number, product code and unit-of-measure inside a standard Code 128 symbol. Here is how to parse them.

HIBC (Health Industry Bar Code) is a healthcare labelling standard built on ordinary symbologies. An HIBC Code 128 symbol is a normal Code 128 barcode whose payload follows a defined structure: a leading «+» flag character, a four-character labeler identification code (LIC), a product or catalogue number, and a unit-of-measure indicator, optionally followed by a quantity and a check character.

Because the symbol is standard Code 128, any Code 128-capable scanner will read it. The difference is interpretation: software must recognise the HIBC structure to split the payload into LIC, product and quantity. The leading plus sign and the check character are part of the data, not decoration, so a decoder that simply strips the first and last characters may lose information.

HIBC is common on medical devices, pharmaceuticals and laboratory products where a small label must carry a manufacturer identifier and a product code without a GS1 GTIN. HIBC Code 39 is the older variant, still found on some devices; both can coexist with GS1 DataMatrix on the same package, which is why scanner configuration matters.

To verify an HIBC label, scan it into a text field and check the structure: the flag, the four-character LIC, the product code and a valid check character. If the value looks truncated, confirm that the scanner is not configured to strip a leading «+» as a keyboard character.
