Online Barcode Reader: Scan a Barcode with Camera or Image

How to read a barcode in the browser, what formats are supported, and why some images fail.

An online barcode reader decodes an image entirely in your browser: the camera frame or uploaded photo is passed to a decoding library, which locates the symbol and returns its text and format. Nothing needs to be uploaded to a server, which makes it convenient for internal labels and quick checks.

For camera scanning, fill the frame with the barcode, hold the phone steady and avoid glare. For uploaded images, use a sharp, well-lit photo or a screenshot at native resolution. Heavy compression, motion blur, shadows across the bars and low contrast are the usual reasons a decode fails.

The reader supports common 1D formats such as Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39 and ITF, plus QR Code. Some specialised formats — GS1 DataBar, MaxiCode, postal codes — may not be supported by every decoder. If a symbol is not recognised, try a different tool or the scanner hardware used in production.

Reading a barcode is also a good diagnostic step: if the reader returns the expected value but your system rejects it, the problem is in the data or the database, not the print. If the reader cannot decode a printed label that looks fine, suspect quiet zone, contrast or bar-width distortion.
