ISBN to Barcode: How to Convert an ISBN into a Bookland EAN-13 Barcode

An ISBN-13 is already the payload of a book barcode. Here is what changes, what the 978/979 prefix means, and how to print it.

Book barcodes are EAN-13 symbols whose payload is the ISBN-13. Since 2007, ISBN-13 and the EAN-13 bookland code share the same 13 digits, so conversion is mostly a formatting step: remove hyphens and spaces, keep the 978 or 979 prefix, and let the generator confirm the check digit. Older ISBN-10 values must first be converted to ISBN-13 by prefixing 978 and recomputing the check digit.

The 978 prefix identifies books; 979 is used when the 978 range is exhausted and for some music publications. The remaining digits carry the registration group, registrant, publication element and check digit. Do not invent an ISBN or reuse one from another title — the number is assigned by the national ISBN agency and maps to a specific edition and format.

A retail book cover usually carries the EAN-13 barcode plus a separate EAN-5 add-on showing the price. The add-on is optional and must match the price printed on the cover. If you only need the scannable book code, generate the EAN-13 and leave the add-on for the cover designer.

When printing, keep the barcode at least 25 mm wide for reliable scanning, place it on a light background, and leave the quiet zone clear. Verify by scanning the printed proof and comparing the decoded digits with the ISBN. A mismatch is usually a missing or wrong check digit, which the generator will flag before export.
